Services - Opening Doors

Opening Doors, Hospice by the Sea's outreach program, is designed to increase awareness of, and access to, our services within the Hispanic and African American populations in Broward and Palm Beach counties.  It's rooted in our strong belief that everyone deserves quality care and quality of life when they're ill.

Abriendo Puertas iniciativa

Targeted to the Hispanic community, the goal of our Abriendo Puertas initiative is to educate individuals about the options they have when faced with serious or life-limiting illness. We stress the philosophy and benefits of our hospice and palliative services, including the fact that our care is home-based, family-centered, and sensitive to the traditions and customs of Hispanic cultures.  We also emphasize the support we provide to family caregivers.

In 2002, our Abriendo Puertas initiative was launched with a generous start-up grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Major local funding was also supplied by the Quantum Foundation and Allegany Franciscan Ministries.  Today, Abriendo Puertas stands as a model, nationwide, for cultural competency.

Our African-American initiative

Through education, this initiative promotes understanding of the options African-Americans in our community have when faced with serious or life-limiting illness. Our program for African Americans also emphasizes that our care is home-based, family-centered, and sensitive to cultural traditions and customs.

We introduced our African American program on a grassroots level, through neighborhood institutions, organizations and events.
